Acerola, or Barbados Cherry, is the fruit of a tropical plant (Malpighia punicifolia L.) widely present in Central and South America.

Acerola has recently been the focus of considerable interest as a natural source of vitamin C, whose powerful antioxidant action has been extensively studied.

Acerola also contains flavonoids, especially rutin and hesperidine, which act synergistically with vitamin C.

We must thank Linus Pauling, the twice Nobel prize winner for chemistry, who extensively studied the role of this substance in our body (he supported high doses), exploring the possible therapeutic properties of this important vitamin.

Vitamin C stimulates collagen synthesis and enhances skin surface hydration. Its concentration diminishes by up to 70% with exposure to sunlight and to pollution.

The same is true for smoking and passive smoking: it seems that every cigarette can “consume” 25 mg of vitamin C, and that smokers present a deficiency that is 4% higher than non-smokers.

Acerola: fruit rich in many nutrients and phytonutrients, particularly flavonoids as rutin and hesperidin. Acerola is mostly used because of its relevant concentration of vitamin C.

Vitamin C (ascorbic acid): one of the most important vitamins for our body, which is unable to synthesize it; hence the need for dietary supplementation. Moreover, vitamin C does not build up in the body, and must be taken regularly to maintain its blood levels constant.

Rose hip: the false fruits of rose hip are a rich source of vitamin C.

Rutin: also known as rutoside, it is a flavonoid glycoside derived from quercetin.

Hesperidin: component of the bioflavonoid family.
