The main action of Medicago sativa, which is probably attributed to the presence of saponins, concerns its capacity to prevent an elevation in cholesterol levels. In fact, these compounds reduce intestinal absorption of cholesterol and increase the excretion of bile acids in stools, hindering atherosclerotic processes.

The other important action of alfalfa concerns the hormonal effect attributed to phytoestrogens, compounds with oestrogen-like molecular structures that bind estradiol receptors. It is used to control menopausal discomfort.
