The seeds of Nigella sativa (or black cumin) has been used as a traditional remedy for more than 2,000 years.  Of the many medicinal plants, N. sativa has always been considered one of the most valuable, nutrient-rich herbs: many scientific studies are under way to validate the traditional uses claimed by this species’ small seeds.

To date, research has shown that these seeds and their components have proven to be an extraordinary natural treatment for a broad array of chronic disorders and infectious diseases (bacterial, fungal, viral and parasitic infections).

In the field of chronic diseases, black cumin has been widely studied for its possible antidiabetic mechanisms due to its modulation of redox reactions, its alleviation of inflammation, its improvement of lipid profiles, its increasing of good cholesterol (HDL-c), and its reduction of bad fats (LDL-c, total cholesterol and triglycerides).

Various studies have also shown the hypotensive action of black cumin seeds in addition to its neuroprotection effects.

As a medicinal plant, black cumin also exhibits significant antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal and antiparasitic activity. Specifically, in addition to inhibiting the formation of bacterial biofilms, this plant’s seeds have demonstrated promising H. pylori-fighting activity.

Regarding anti-allergic activity, the seeds of N. sativa have been shown to be useful in improving daytime and ophthalmic symptoms.
