The dried rhizomes of nettle yield the drug that has produced important results in recent decades by reducing the symptoms of benign prostate hyperplasia. This disorder affects ca. 50% of the male population aged over 50, and reaches about 70% in subjects aged the over 60. Additional data inviting to pay attention to this problem, which envisages a 55% increase in prostate disorders over the next 10 years.

An authoritative study verified the efficacy of the administration of 300 mg twice a day of nettle extract to 100 patients with benign prostate hyperplasia for 8 weeks. It had an excellent impact on reducing clinical symptoms.

Other more recent studies have highlighted antioxidant properties, identifying nettle as an interesting candidate for the development of phytomedicines or of food supplements as therapies for various inflammatory disorders.
