Vitamin K

Vitamin K1 Food Supplement (phylloquinone)

Vitamin K1 is very important for cardiovascular health: adequate intake of this nutrient is associated with a reduced risk of developing cardiovascular diseases; moreover, vitamin K1 is essential for the activation of important factors involved in coagulation.

Moreover, it has been ascertained that chronic deficiency of vitamin K can cause osteoporosis and increase the risk of fractures. Vitamin K1 favours conversion of the protein osteocalcin from its inactive form into its active form, which is necessary to bind calcium to the bones, even if to a lesser degree than vitamin K2, which is more specific for bone health.

Vitamin K deficiency can lead to defective bone mineralisation and, according to many studies, patients with fractures caused by osteoporosis present very low serum levels of vitamin K.

Vitamin K1: K vitamins are a family of fat soluble vitamins; the two main groups found in nature are K1 (phylloquinone) and K2 (menaquinone). They are essential to activate k-dependent proteins involved in blood coagulation, in bone metabolism and in the inhibition of arterial calcification. Vitamin K1 is retained in the liver, thus its main role is to activate the coagulation factors.
